Movie in Short :
At
the end of Drishyam (2015), you breathe a sigh of
relief. Case closed, family saved, bad guy incinerated. Or so you’d think.
Seven years later, Drishyam
2 takes us back to the palm-trees-lined roads of South Goa
and the charming little house of the Salgaonkar family — an idyllic
setting to be sure. But try as they might, the Salgaonkar family can’t seem to
shake off the skeletons in their closet… quite literally.
A quick recap. The protagonist Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay
Devgn) is a cable operator who thinks of life as one big movie. His
nights are spent glued to the screen, greedily consuming hit films of the
yesteryears and days being the ideal family man to his wife Nandini (Shriya
Saran), and daughters Anju (Ishita Dutta) and Anu (Mrunal Jadhav). Life is
good, mundane even… until tragedy strikes in the form of Sameer Deshmukh
(Rishab Chadha).
Sameer
blackmails Anju with an incriminating video he has of her from a school trip.
In a struggle that ensues later, with Sameer being violent with Nandini, Anju
strikes him on the head to save her mother, but the blunt force ends up killing
him instantly. When Vijay returns home and learns of the incident, he makes a
pledge: he’ll never let anything happen to his family.
It’s
this pledge that he’s still honouring above others in Drishyam 2.
Although Sameer’s mother, IG Meera Deshmukh (Tabu) had tracked down her missing
son to the Salgaonkar doorstep, she couldn’t solidify any proof to incarcerate
the family due to Vijay’s (near) foolproof covering of their tracks. However,
once Drishyam 2 kickstarts we realise two things.
First, Meera has not given up the hunt. Second, someone saw Vijay bury Sameer’s
body under the to-be-built Pondolem Police Station.
Worse, Meera’s found a strong ally in the form of the new IG
Tarun Ahlawat (Akshaye Khanna), a maestro in criminal psychology. Tarun and
Vijay start a cat and mouse game, with Vijay preparing for damage control
should someone, someday find Sameer’s body. Tarun is smug and overconfident
while Vijay is calculating… something that works in his favour as we see
later.
By the end of Drishyam 2, Vijay’s fears are realised. An
unlikely witness — a drug dealer on the run — ends up being his kryptonite. On
that fateful night, David had seen Vijay bury Sameer’s body and by a stroke of
luck or misfortune (depending on the way you look at it), he comes across the
handsome award being brandied for information about Vijay. David’s statement,
coupled with Nandini's confession that Inspector Jenny manipulated her to make
gives the cops enough ammunition to finally arrest Vijay. But remember… Vijay’s
always been a step ahead.
Drishyam 2 lives
up to the thrilling reputation afforded to all the Drishyam movies
(the original two Malayalam films and part one of the Hindi remake) with its
unexpected twists and turns. Vijay, who has always been enraptured by the
movies, and now owns and runs a theatre ropes in a popular screenwriter Murad
Ali (Saurabh Shukla) to write the script for a movie he’s been itching to make.
The premise? Not surprisingly… the plotline of the first Drishyam,
but with one significant change. At the end of this version, the protagonist
goes to jail. Maybe somewhere, Vijay lived out a fictitious punishment that he
knows he deserves… justice served to anyone breaking the law, no matter how
“just” the cause.
Vijay implores Murad, who has high connections in the forces, to
find out the police procedures that would follow the body being found.
Meanwhile, he says the ending needs work, but not before he takes the first
draft of the script and gets it published. The books, naturally, don’t get wide
circulation. Meanwhile, he’d also tracked down the family of a boy similar in
age to Sameer, who had also died due to a blow to the head. The family is of
modest means, and Vijay gets to fulfil a dual purpose in his interaction with
them. First, he gets to play saviour again, by lending them his support and
money for the daughter’s wedding. Second, he gets the son’s bones in return, as
gratitude.
His obsession with cinema, especially crime thrillers and the
like, work in his favour yet again. Vijay, always charming, befriends the
security guard of the hospital where Sameer’s bones are being stored for the
DNA test. The night before, he gets the guard drunk and then sneaks in to
replace Sameer’s bones with the other boy’s. From there, things go like
clockwork. The DNA test comes back negative, and at the same time, Vijay’s
lawyers find the published books and make a strong case saying the police
started a fake case around the book’s story (and what was done to the
Salgaonkar family).
And just like that, Vijay manages to pull a fast one over the
cops again. And even though you’re rooting for him, you can’t help thinking… is
it right? Sure, he did what he had to do for his family… but at what
cost?
And so victory comes with a sour taste. After all, Vijay and his
family are complicit in a crime that led to the death of a person… even if that
person was the worst sort. However, the sequel addresses that too. Vijay is
humanised from his role of saviour when, in a moment of retribution, we see him
leave Sameer’s bones at the doorstep of the Deshmukhs so they can perform his
final rights. After all… everyone deserves a final goodbye.
